Former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre has yet to submit all the necessary documents to certify his candidacy in the Quebec Liberal Party leadership race. This information comes from an anonymous source within the party who spoke to The Canadian Press on condition of anonymity.
The source claims that the missing documents pertain to Coderre's financial situation. Media outlets have reported that he owes approximately $400,000 in provincial and federal taxes.
Coderre filed for candidacy at the QLP office in Quebec City last month and stated that he had no outstanding debts to the two tax agencies. He maintained last week that his paperwork was in order and that he had provided the party with all the requested documents. However, he did not respond to a request for comment on Friday.
The committee responsible for authorizing candidates has the authority to accept or reject applicants within seven days of receiving their documents. The nomination period closes in April, and the election for a new leader will take place in June.
On Friday, the party's president stated that the process regarding Coderre's candidacy is "ongoing.

The people of Quebec deserve a leader who is above reproach. Coderre's financial situation raises red flags.

There are other qualified candidates in the race who don't have these financial burdens. Let's choose a leader we can trust.

This issue is too serious to ignore. The QLP should investigate further and ensure transparency.

The QLP has a duty to choose the best possible leader. Allowing Coderre to run with unresolved financial issues sends the wrong message.

We need a leader with integrity and a proven track record of fiscal responsibility. Coderre doesn't fit the bill.

This isn't the first time Coderre has been in financial trouble. His history shows a pattern of irresponsible behavior.
