Concerns Surround Black History Month Amid Political Changes

As the Trump administration undertook significant reductions in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, worries started to surface regarding the potential jeopardy of Black History Month. Nevertheless, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reassured the public that the President intended to sign a proclamation recognizing February as Black History Month, consistent with a tradition upheld since 1976.

On February 1, President Trump followed through with this commitment, declaring the month as a time to celebrate important figures such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Thomas Sowell, and Justice Clarence Thomas, whom he described as symbols of America's excellence and progress. Trump emphasized the significance of their contributions to promoting equality under the law, encouraging all Americans to draw inspiration from their achievements.

Leavitt reiterated the President's eagerness to acknowledge Black History Month during a press briefing, even as the backdrop included a controversial memo from the Department of Defense. This memo announced a decision to cease the use of official resources for recognizing Black History Month and several other identity-focused observances, reflecting a broader effort to eliminate what the department termed as "identity months."

The DoD underscored that their focus remained on unity and a singular mission, asserting that any attempts to prioritize specific groups could disrupt teamwork and mission effectiveness. Despite the Department of Defense's stance, other federal institutions, including the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the Smithsonian Museum, planned to honor Black History Month with relevant exhibitions and events. Renowned history professor Dr. Martha S. Jones suggested that the celebration of Black history in America would continue independently of governmental endorsement, highlighting its existence prior to presidential recognition and its resilience moving forward.

Celebrating Black history should not come with the caveat of reducing efforts to support diversity and inclusion.

Trump’s legacy includes divisiveness, and this proclamation does little to change that narrative.

We need more than just a proclamation; we need systemic change that addresses racial injustice.
