Minutes before landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport, an American Eagle flight collided with an Army helicopter while flying over the Potomac River. The shocking incident, which was captured on video, led to the loss of all 60 passengers and four crew members aboard the plane, as well as the three Army personnel on the helicopter.
In the aftermath of the crash, Washington D.C.'s Fire Chief John Donnelly expressed pessimism regarding the chances of finding survivors following an extensive search operation. Among the passengers were numerous individuals returning from a training camp related to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas. Additionally, two Chinese nationals were confirmed to be on the flight.
The airline has withheld the names of the crew members, but the family of First Officer Sam Lilley confirmed his presence on the flight, highlighting the meaningful impact he had on others. Flight attendant Danasia Brown and fellow attendant Ian Epstein were also identified as victims, with their families sharing heartfelt tributes to their loved ones. Captain Jonathan Campos’s passing was mourned by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, which praised his dedication.
The Army revealed the identities of the three individuals aboard the helicopter, including Staff Sgt. Ryan O’Hara, who left behind a wife and young child. Family members expressed their pride in his military service and commitment to his country. As rescue efforts shifted to recovery, tragic stories of victims began to emerge, revealing the heartbreaking impacts on families and communities.
Among the passengers were young figure skaters Spencer Lane and Jinna Han, traveling with their mothers, both of whom were greatly admired in the skating community. Brielle Beyer, a talented 12-year-old skater, and her mother were also victims, prompting devastation among their loved ones. Additionally, the skating community mourned the loss of Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, esteemed coaches who dedicated their lives to the sport, while their son experienced only fleeting joy in competing just prior to the tragedy.
