Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has criticized Google for complying with Donald Trump's executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America." Sheinbaum argues that Trump lacks the authority to unilaterally change the name of a body of water shared by multiple countries.

Sheinbaum points to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which limits a country's sovereign territory to 12 nautical miles from its coastline. Therefore, the United States cannot claim exclusive rights to the name of the Gulf of Mexico.
