Tragic Collision Claims Lives of 67, Victims Identified

The recent incident involving a collision between an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army helicopter has led to the grim recovery of multiple bodies from the Potomac River, totaling 67 fatalities. Authorities are currently engaged in the harrowing task of identifying the deceased, leaving families in anguish as they await confirmation of their worst fears.

Among the identified victims are the flight crews from both aircraft. Captain Jonathan Campos, 34, originally from New York but raised in Florida, had a passion for aviation that was nurtured through his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he became a certified flight instructor in 2017 and transitioned to a commercial pilot the following year. His uncle expressed profound shock and sorrow at the loss of his nephew, emphasizing his love for flying.

First Officer Sam Lilley, 28, hailed from Richmond Hill, Georgia, and was described by his sister as a vibrant, adventurous soul. Just before the accident, he had been visiting his sister in North Carolina with his fiancé. Although he initially worked in marketing, he followed his father's footsteps into aviation, and his family emphasized his enthusiasm for travel and flying.

In addition to the American Airlines crew, the U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter featured Staff Sgt. Ryan O’Hara, a father and husband, and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Eaves, who had just recently confirmed his death through social media. Eaves was recognized as a dedicated Army officer and was fondly remembered by family members for his positive influence. His niece referred to him as a guiding light in challenging times.

The Black Hawk's crew chief, Ryan O'Hara, was also among the casualties. He had participated in the Parkview Marine Corps JROTC and was described as an active and involved youth. O'Hara had served in the U.S. Army and even completed a deployment in Afghanistan, leaving behind his wife and their one-year-old child. The news of his passing struck his former instructors and friends deeply, eliciting feelings of shock and loss within the community.
