The Trump administration is preparing to revoke the legal status of a significant number of migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who were permitted to enter the United States under a program initiated by former President Joe Biden. According to documents obtained by CBS News, the Department of Homeland Security is considering a proposal that would dismantle the program allowing over 530,000 individuals to fly to the U.S. with the support of American sponsors.
The Biden administration believed that the CHNV program would reduce illegal immigration by providing legal pathways for citizens from these countries to come to the U.S. However, President Trump halted this initiative just hours after taking office. Officials from the Trump administration claimed that the program misused immigration parole, which was the legal basis used by Biden's team for the admissions and the issuance of work permits.
If this new action proceeds, those individuals accepted under the CHNV policy would lose their parole status and face deportation proceedings unless they secure another form of immigration status, such as asylum or Temporary Protected Status. It remains uncertain how many out of the hundreds of thousands who benefited from this initiative have taken steps to apply for other immigration programs. Furthermore, the timeline for the finalization of Trump's plan has not been disclosed.
Individuals whose parole classifications are revoked would lose their eligibility to work legally in the U.S. and would be summoned to immigration court, marking the initiation of the deportation process. Recently, the Trump administration has also authorized federal immigration officers, including those from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to pursue the expedited deportation of those who entered the U.S. through various Biden-era policies, including the CHNV program. Representatives from the Department of Homeland Security have yet to comment on the situation.

It's heartbreaking to see so many families at risk of deportation due to a political decision. Politics shouldn't dictate human lives!

This is yet another example of the Trump administration's cruel approach to immigration. These individuals deserve a chance to build a life here.

Revoking the legal status of migrants goes against America’s values. We should be welcoming those in need, not sending them back.

Migrants deserve stability, and this uncertainty is unnecessarily cruel. The Trump administration needs to reconsider!

This proposal is a slap in the face to everyone who believes in compassion and fairness. We should be helping those in need, not punishing them.
