Tragedy Strikes at Reagan National Airport
A devastating collision occurred at Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C. on Wednesday evening, claiming the lives of all 60 passengers and four crew members aboard an American Airlines jet, as well as the three soldiers on board an army helicopter. The incident, captured by airport security cameras, unfolded as the jet, operated by PSA Airlines, was preparing to land.
Footage shows the American Eagle Flight 5342, a CRJ700 regional jet, colliding with the Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter, causing both aircraft to plunge into the Potomac River. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but tragically, no survivors were found.
The jet, originating from Wichita, Kansas, carried ice skaters, their families, and coaches returning from events in the city. The helicopter, on a military training flight, belonged to Davison Army Airfield in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Moments before the crash, air traffic controllers instructed the jet to land on a shorter runway than originally planned. The pilots acknowledged the change and adjusted their approach. However, less than 30 seconds before impact, communication with the helicopter was lost, and the two aircraft collided.
Reagan National Airport, situated on the Potomac River, is the closest airport to the U.S. capital and operates within one of the most heavily controlled and monitored airspaces in the country. This busy airspace accommodates both military and commercial flights, carrying thousands of passengers, including high-ranking government and military officials.
The airport's main north-south runway, due to its limited length, handles over 90% of flights, making it the busiest runway in the U.S. with over 800 daily takeoffs and landings. This high volume of traffic has led to several near-miss incidents in recent years, raising concerns about safety at the airport.
The tragic collision at Reagan National Airport has left a community in mourning and sparked renewed discussions about air traffic management and safety protocols in one of the nation's busiest airspaces.

Heartbreaking to hear about this tragedy. The FAA must be held accountable for these repeated failures in safety.

I can't believe this happened! There needs to be stricter protocols in place for air traffic control.
