The International Criminal Court (ICC) is facing a number of challenges, including a lack of trials, external pressure, and difficulties apprehending suspects.
The ICC has not had a single trial since 2006, when it arrested its first suspect. This is due in part to the fact that many suspects are beyond the court's reach, either because they are not citizens of ICC member states or because their countries are unwilling to cooperate with the court.
The ICC is also facing external pressure, notably from the United States. In 2017, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on the court's staff, and in 2023, a bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate that would sanction the court as an institution.
The ICC has also been the victim of cyberattacks and other security threats. In 2022, the Dutch intelligence service said it had foiled a sophisticated attempt by a Russian spy to work as an intern at the court.
Despite these challenges, the ICC remains committed to its mission of investigating and prosecuting those most responsible for international crimes. The court has issued 32 unsealed arrest warrants, and its current prosecutor has requested a record-breaking 24 arrest warrants.
However, it is unclear whether the ICC will be able to overcome the challenges it faces and achieve its goals. The court's lack of trials and external pressure are serious threats to its legitimacy, and its difficulties apprehending suspects make it difficult to hold those responsible for international crimes accountable.

24 arrest warrants? Big deal. How many convictions? Zero. They're all talk and no action.

It's understandable that trials take time, especially when the suspects are well-connected. But the ICC is making progress.

It's not easy apprehending suspects when they have powerful allies. But the ICC is persistent and will not give up.

The ICC has a lack of trials? What about all those countries it has invaded? Hypocrisy much!

It's not 'those most responsible' it's 'those they can get their hands on.' They're picking on low-hanging fruit.

External pressure? You mean from those who want the criminals brought to justice? More likely they're facing internal corruption.

It's true, there haven't been many convictions. But the ICC has made important strides in gathering evidence and building cases.

They claim to investigate and prosecute, but they've achieved neither. It's time to shut them down.

External pressure is to be expected from those who fear accountability. It's a sign that the ICC is doing its job.
