On Wednesday, in the French Alps, four Norwegian skiers and a Swiss woman tragically lost their lives due to avalanches while skiing off the marked trails. A group of seven Norwegians was caught in a significant avalanche in Val-Cenis, situated in the southeastern Savoie region near the Italian border. Three of the skiers were killed instantly, while a woman was severely injured and later died after being airlifted to a hospital in Grenoble due to cardiac arrest and hypothermia. Fortunately, the remaining three members of the group were unharmed, assisted by avalanche beacons that enabled rescue teams to locate them.
In a separate avalanche incident, a 30-year-old Swiss woman died while skiing with her father and brother on the north face of the Aiguillette des Posettes in the Mont Blanc massif. Her brother sustained injuries from the incident, while their father emerged without harm. Local authorities had previously issued warnings about avalanche risks across several alpine regions, cautioning skiers and hikers to heed the advice of resorts and emergency services. The Haute-Savoie authorities reiterated the message emphasizing the importance of avoiding risky areas due to unstable snow conditions.
Earlier, an avalanche at Les Grands Montets, close to Chamonix, resulted in the death of a 55-year-old skier, initially reported to be British. This individual was skiing off-piste in a closed area, prompting ski patrols to discover the man's location as they were inspecting the avalanche. Despite the rapid response of medics, he was declared dead at the scene. Authorities later corrected the initial report, stating that the victim was a dual national of Brazil and Portugal. In France, nearly 100 individuals are involved in avalanche incidents each year, leading to an average of 30 fatalities, underscoring the ongoing risks associated with skiing in such perilous conditions.
