The military deportation flights to Guatemala ordered by President Trump have come at a significant cost, exceeding $4,675 per migrant. This figure is more than five times the cost of a first-class ticket on a commercial flight from El Paso, Texas, the departure point for the flights.

The high cost is primarily attributed to the use of C-17 military transport aircraft, which have an estimated operating cost of $28,500 per hour. A roundtrip flight to Guatemala, excluding ground time and preparation, takes approximately 10.5 hours.

While the Pentagon has not commented on the cost, President Trump has defended the use of military aircraft, stating that it sends a strong message to those considering illegal entry into the United States. He has also threatened economic consequences for countries that refuse to accept deportees.

The cost of these military flights is significantly higher than commercial charter flights used by ICE for deportations. According to ICE, the cost of a charter flight can range from $8,577 to $17,000 per flight hour, depending on the number of passengers and the duration of the flight.

The use of military aircraft for deportations has raised concerns about the cost-effectiveness of this approach. Critics argue that the high cost could be better utilized for other purposes, such as border security or humanitarian aid.
