The Ministry of Culture and Tourism in China highlighted a significant boost in domestic tourism for the year 2024. According to the data released, Chinese citizens undertook a total of 5.615 billion domestic trips, which is an increase of 724 million trips from the previous year, resulting in a notable growth rate of 14.8 percent.
The statistics indicate that urban dwellers were particularly active, with 4.37 billion trips attributed to them, representing a 16.3 percent rise compared to the prior year. Meanwhile, rural residents made 1.245 billion trips, which shows a 9.9 percent increase. When broken down quarterly, the travel figures reveal strong performance across the board, with the first quarter witnessing 1.419 billion trips (up 16.7 percent), the second quarter at 1.306 billion trips (up 11.8 percent), the third quarter reaching 1.512 billion trips (up 17.2 percent), and the fourth quarter totaling 1.378 billion trips (up 13.2 percent).
In terms of financial impact, domestic tourists in 2024 spent approximately 5.75 trillion yuan (around $790 billion), marking an increase of 840 billion yuan from 2023, equivalent to a growth of 17.1 percent. Urban residents were responsible for the majority of this spending, contributing 4.93 trillion yuan, which is an 18.0 percent rise, while rural tourists spent about 830 billion yuan, reflecting a 12.2 percent increase in their expenditures.
