Trump Appeals Hush-Money Conviction
Former President Donald Trump has initiated the process of appealing his conviction in the hush-money case. His new legal team filed a notice of appeal in the Manhattan courthouse where he was originally sentenced.
The appeal challenges both the May 30th conviction and the January 10th sentencing. Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records. He received a no-jail sentence.
Trump's previous lawyer, Todd Blanche, had indicated an appeal would be filed. Under New York law, there was a 30-day window to do so. Blanche has since been nominated by Trump as deputy attorney general.
The appeal is being handled by the prestigious Manhattan law firm Sullivan & Cromwell. In a statement, the firm's representative emphasized the importance of the appeal for the rule of law, New York's reputation as a business and legal center, and the precedent set for public officials. They expressed confidence in the case being dismissed on appeal.
Trump's previous legal team had attempted to have the case dismissed based on presidential immunity. This strategy is expected to be a central argument in the full appellate brief, which will be filed in the coming months with the state's intermediary appellate court.
The Manhattan District Attorney's office has not yet commented on the appeal.
