Trump Settles Lawsuit Against Meta for $25 Million
Former President Donald Trump has settled his lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, for $25 million. The lawsuit stemmed from Trump's suspension from Facebook in 2021 following the January 6th Capitol riot.
Trump's attorney, John Coale, confirmed the settlement to Business Insider. He stated that most of the settlement funds will be directed towards Trump's presidential library.
Meta also confirmed the settlement to Business Insider. The agreement was first reported by The Wall Street Journal just as Meta was due to report their quarterly earnings.
Meta's Efforts to Stay in Trump's Good Graces
This settlement is the latest in a series of efforts by Meta and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, to maintain a positive relationship with Trump. Following Trump's election victory in 2016, Meta donated $1 million to his inauguration fund. Zuckerberg and his wife also attended Trump's inauguration.
In addition to the settlement with Trump, Meta has also made donations to the future Trump library. ABC News agreed to pay $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit brought by Trump, with the money reportedly going towards the library.
Trump's Lawsuits Against Other Tech Companies
Trump has also filed lawsuits against other tech companies, including Twitter (now X) and YouTube, for suspending his accounts. A federal judge dismissed Trump's lawsuit against Twitter in 2022, and the suit against YouTube appears to have been administratively closed in 2023.
