Sean Duffy was officially appointed as the transportation secretary on Tuesday, a position that puts him at the forefront of President Trump's efforts to revise regulations and improve the nation's infrastructure. The former congressman from Wisconsin received a strong bipartisan endorsement from the Senate, passing with a vote of 77-22.
In his new role, Duffy will lead the Department of Transportation, which employs over 55,000 individuals and manages a budget that allocates tens of billions of dollars annually. This agency is responsible for maintaining and regulating the country’s highways, railroads, and airspace, while also establishing safety standards that apply to various modes of transportation, including cars and trucks. During his confirmation hearings, he expressed his commitment to restoring confidence in Boeing and pledged to hire more air traffic controllers while advocating for a streamlined regulatory framework for self-driving cars to replace the inconsistent state regulations currently in place.
A potential shift in the regulatory environment could significantly benefit Elon Musk, whose electric vehicle company, Tesla, saw a boost in stock prices during Trump’s presidency due to anticipated unified federal regulations. Duffy, when questioned by senators, reaffirmed his intention to let the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) carry out its investigations into Tesla without interference.
Moreover, the competition with Chinese firms was a recurring topic in Duffy’s hearings, particularly concerning self-driving technology. He highlighted that without clear national regulations, the U.S. risks falling behind countries like China that provide a cohesive regulatory environment for innovation. Duffy also noted that the NHTSA is currently investigating several safety concerns related to Tesla vehicles, including incidents linked to its Full Self-Driving feature, which requires active human oversight.
Musk's ties to Trump, including a substantial financial contribution to his campaign, may influence Duffy's decisions at the DOT. The outcomes of Duffy's policy choices will not only impact Tesla but also affect Musk’s SpaceX, which holds considerable contracts with federal agencies and has faced fines from the FAA for regulatory infractions.

Let's face it — Duffy is a puppet for Musk and the rest of the billionaire class. No real change for the common man.

We need someone bold like Duffy to shake up the regulation process. Time to modernize our infrastructure.

A budget of tens of billions means a lot of opportunities for corruption. Duffy should be watched closely.

It's absurd to think Duffy will objectively regulate Tesla while he’s part of the same network that benefits from them.

The last thing we need is someone with questionable ethics handling our transportation safety. What about the investigations into Tesla?

I’m not convinced that Duffy will prioritize the safety of everyday drivers over the interests of big tech like Tesla.
