Trump Administration Ramps Up Immigration Crackdown with Camera-Ready Arrests
The Trump administration is ramping up its immigration crackdown with a focus on media-ready arrests. Personnel from multiple agencies assisting immigration officials have been instructed to be camera-ready and wear their agency logos prominently. This comes as the administration conducts mass deportations and arrests across the U.S.
Federal agencies are posting photos and videos on social media depicting agents detaining people, often wearing vests that read "Police ICE" and "Homeland Security." Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen posted a video of herself wearing an "ICE" vest, stating, "Here in New York City this morning, we are getting the dirtbags off these streets."
Immigration officials have even invited media personalities to join their operations. Dr. Phil McGraw, better known as Dr. Phil, "embedded" with an ICE team in Chicago over the weekend. His attempts to extract an admission from a suspect were condemned by civil rights groups.
Chicago residents reported seeing immigration officials and unmarked black trucks in their neighborhoods early Sunday morning. Some residents expressed fear and anxiety, with one resident stating, "They took our neighbor's dad... We are terrified."
The Trump administration began launching raids across the country last week, including in Newark, Miami, Maryland, and Colorado. The agency reported arresting 286 people on Saturday and 956 people on Sunday.
The administration has also taken other steps to implement its hardline immigration agenda, including attempting to end birthright citizenship.
