China and Philippines Discuss South China Sea Issues
On January 16, 2025, the 10th Meeting of the China and Philippines Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea was held in Xiamen, China. The meeting, co-chaired by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong and Philippine Foreign Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, addressed recent tensions in the region.
China expressed concerns over the Philippines' actions in the South China Sea, including alleged infringements and provocative activities. The Chinese side also urged the Philippines to adhere to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and resolve disputes through dialogue and consultation.
Both sides acknowledged the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea and agreed to strengthen communication and cooperation. They also discussed ways to manage maritime disagreements and continue collaboration in areas like coast guard operations, marine science, and environmental protection.
The meeting highlighted the importance of the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism in fostering communication, trust, and cooperation on maritime issues. However, the upcoming Philippine midterm elections and uncertainties surrounding the US administration's approach to the South China Sea add complexity to the situation.
The Philippines' recent actions, including protests against Chinese vessels in its claimed exclusive economic zone, demonstrate a strategy of balancing dialogue with China while seeking support from the US and Japan.
Despite ongoing tensions, dialogue and consultation remain crucial for managing the situation and finding peaceful solutions.
