Colorado Woman Accused of Killing Children Faces Extradition to US
A Colorado woman accused of killing her two young children will be extradited to the United States to face trial, a UK judge has ruled. Kimberlee Singler was arrested in the UK in December 2023 after fleeing the US following the deaths of her 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son.
Singler's attorney argued against extradition, claiming that a life sentence without parole in the US would violate her human rights. However, the judge ruled that the extradition could proceed, leaving the final decision to the UK Home Secretary.
Singler is accused of drugging and killing her children, as well as injuring her 11-year-old daughter, before fleeing to the UK. The killings allegedly occurred during an ongoing custody battle with her husband.
Authorities found the two dead children in bed together, along with a blood-stained knife and empty bottles of sleeping pills. The surviving child reported that Singler had told the children to close their eyes before attacking them.
If convicted in the US, Singler faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of child abuse, and one count of assault. The prosecution argued that a governor could eventually grant Singler clemency, even if she receives a life sentence without parole.
The case has drawn attention to the differences in sentencing between the US and the UK. While life sentences without parole are rare in the UK, they are more common in the US.
