On Monday, President Donald Trump will sign an executive order to create an American equivalent of Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system. This action has garnered support from national security experts who view it as a realization of Ronald Reagan's strategic defense framework, initiated in the 1980s.
The executive order outlines plans for a next-generation missile defense system designed to protect against an array of threats including ballistic, hypersonic, and advanced cruise missiles. It emphasizes the expedited development of various advanced technologies such as space-based interceptors and capabilities aimed at neutralizing threats before deployment.
In addition, the order mandates an evaluation of the current U.S. missile defense setup to ensure adequate protection for American forces abroad and to enhance cooperation with allies on missile defense technology. The White House has acknowledged that the risk of attacks from these missile systems has grown significantly over the decades, referring to it as a “catastrophic threat.”
President Trump has framed this initiative as a part of his commitment to fortifying national defenses, which he previously pledged during a rally in December. Experts, like Victoria Coates from the Heritage Foundation, commend the move, asserting that it will actualize Reagan's vision of missile defense as a proactive measure to save lives rather than simply retaliate after an attack.
Coates indicated that the U.S., along with Israel, has set a high standard for missile defense, successfully thwarting missile threats in the past. Given the current global instability, the implementation of a strong missile defense system is seen as a necessary step to ensure the safety of the American populace.
