A 53-year-old individual has been arrested and charged with murdering Claire Chick, a beloved lecturer at the University of Plymouth. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening on West Hoe Road, prompting police to respond to reports of a seriously injured woman. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Chick, who was 48 years old, succumbed to her injuries the following morning.
The alleged perpetrator, Paul Butler, residing on Stangray Avenue in Plymouth, was apprehended the next day while in Liskeard, approximately 20 miles from Plymouth. He is set to face Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on Monday to respond to the murder charges against him.
Claire Chick, formerly known as Claire Butler, had a significant impact as a nursing program developer across Europe, Africa, and Asia, according to her colleagues. In a heartfelt statement from her family, they expressed their profound grief and described her as a loving mother and an exuberant spirit who brought joy to those around her. They highlighted her vivacious personality, her love for dancing and singing, and how she was cherished by her five grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as “a favorite grandma.”
Detective Inspector Rob Smith from Devon and Cornwall Police has assured the public that detectives are continuing to support Chick's family during this difficult time. The community has been recognized for their cooperation, which has assisted in the ongoing investigation. Friends and colleagues of Chick have expressed their shock and sorrow at her untimely passing, recalling her warmth, kindness, and authenticity as qualities that made her unforgettable.
