Peace Deal Possible Under Trump, But Ukraine Must Be Included
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes a deal to end the war in Ukraine could be reached under Donald Trump's presidency, but he insists that Ukraine must be included in any peace talks.
Zelensky made these statements during a press conference alongside Moldovan President Maia Sandu. He acknowledged that the terms of any potential deal under Trump remain unclear, even to Trump himself, due to Vladimir Putin's lack of interest in ending the war.
However, Zelensky emphasized that ending the war would be impossible unless Trump includes Ukraine in the negotiations. He stated, "Otherwise it will not work. Because Russia does not want to end the war, while Ukraine wants to end it."
In a separate interview, Zelensky expressed his belief that Trump genuinely wants to see an end to the war. He described Trump as understanding the challenges associated with the peace process and "simply saying this has to end or it will get worse."
Ukraine, I really hope Ukraine will be there, America, Europe and the Russians."
He added, "Yes, I would really want that Europe would take part, because we will be members of the European Union." Ukraine and Moldova both submitted applications to join the EU days after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Zelensky's statements come as Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine. On Sunday, Zelensky reported that Russia had used 1,250 aerial bombs, over 750 attack drones, and more than 20 missiles to attack Ukraine over the past week. He called on Ukraine's partners "to act in unity."
The war in Ukraine has caused immense suffering and destruction. Finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict remains a top priority for the international community.
