Arbel Yehud has become a central figure in the ongoing crisis impacting the cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas. She was taken hostage during an attack orchestrated by Hamas on October 7, 2023, when militants invaded her home in the Israeli village of Nir Oz, located near the border of the Gaza Strip. At the time of her kidnapping, she was 28 years old, and her partner, Ariel Cunio, was also captured and is still believed to be held in Gaza.
As the situation continues to evolve, Ms. Yehud is regarded as the last known female civilian hostage that Israel believes may still be alive. Another hostage, Shiri Bibas, was also abducted from Nir Oz along with her two young sons. The Israeli military has expressed serious concerns regarding the well-being of Ms. Bibas and her children, although their fate has yet to be confirmed.
Compounding the family's distress, Arbel's brother, Dolev Yehud, was initially thought to have been kidnapped and was missing for months. However, it was later revealed that he never entered Gaza, and in June 2024, the Israeli authorities officially declared his death after identifying his remains in Nir Oz through advanced testing methods.
