Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas and the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, urged President Trump to reconsider his decision to remove security details from former advisers who have been targeted by Iran. They expressed concern that this move could discourage current aides from effectively performing their duties.
The senators' remarks came after Mr. Trump abruptly ended government security protection for three officials from his first term who were involved in his Iran policy and remained under threat. One of these officials, John R. Bolton, Mr. Trump's third national security adviser, has been a vocal critic of Mr. Trump since leaving the administration in 2019. The other two, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former top State Department official Brian Hook, have been supportive of Mr. Trump.
Mr. Cotton, speaking on Fox News, encouraged the president to revisit his decision, particularly for those individuals targeted by Iran, as the president himself was once targeted for assassination by the same country. He confirmed that he had reviewed current intelligence and that the threats remained genuine.
