Hamas Releases Four Israeli Hostages in Exchange for Palestinian Prisoners
Hamas released four Israeli hostages in Gaza on Saturday, October 28, 2023, in exchange for 200 Palestinian prisoners. This was the second release under the ceasefire agreement that began the previous weekend.
A large crowd gathered in Palestine Square in northern Gaza to witness the handover of the hostages to the Red Cross. The four women, Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag, had been captured in a Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, that ignited the Israel-Hamas war.
The White House celebrated the release and stated that the United States would continue to work with Israel to secure the release of all remaining hostages and pursue peace in the region.
In Tel Aviv, crowds gathered to celebrate the hostages' return after 476 days of captivity. Over 60 other soldiers were killed at the Nahal Oz base during the October 7 attack, and one other female soldier was taken hostage from the same unit but was not included in Saturday's release.
Israel Releases 200 Palestinian Prisoners
Following the release of the four hostages, Israel released 200 Palestinian prisoners, including 121 serving life sentences. They were sent to Gaza, Egypt, and potentially other countries in the region.
Concerns Remain for Remaining Israeli Hostages
Despite the release, concerns remain for the remaining Israeli hostages, including Arbel Yehoud and Shiri Bibas and her two children. Hamas has claimed that Bibas and her children were killed in an Israeli bombing in Gaza, but the Israeli government has not confirmed this.
Ceasefire Agreement and Hostage Release Deal
The Israel-Hamas ceasefire and hostage release deal is expected to occur in phases, with each phase negotiated during the phase that comes before it. The first phase includes the release by Hamas of 33 hostages over a six-week period. After that, Hamas is expected to release three hostages taken from Israel every seven days, starting with the living and then moving on to return the bodies of those who have died.
Over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israel are also expected to be released in the first phase of the deal.

Shocking that Israel would release 200 terrorists in exchange for just 4 citizens. This sets a dangerous precedent and emboldens Hamas.
