A Soldier's Journey of Resilience, Hope, and Gratitude Through Cancer and Recovery

From Knee Pain to Pelvic Sarcoma and Back to Life

Rayshaun Smith, a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, first experienced knee pain while stationed in South Korea in 2018. Initially attributing it to his rigorous military lifestyle and intense workouts, he continued with over-the-counter pain medication for years. However, in 2020, a physical therapy session revealed the pain originated from his hip.

a rare grade 3 sarcoma in his pelvis. The news was devastating, and amputation seemed like the only option. But Dr. Nathan Mesko, an orthopedic oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic, offered a glimmer of hope – a 3D-printed implant that could replace the cancerous part of his pelvis while preserving his leg.

The surgery was complex and lengthy, taking between six and ten hours. Recovery was grueling, requiring extensive physical rehabilitation. But Smith's determination and positive attitude helped him regain his strength and mobility.

Unfortunately, the sarcoma recurred in 2022, this time on his femur. Thankfully, early detection and a less invasive procedure allowed for a quicker recovery.

Today, Smith continues to be monitored closely, with regular exams to ensure the cancer doesn't return. He remains grateful for the life-saving surgery and the chance to live a fulfilling life.

"I'm just happy to be alive," he says, reflecting on his journey.
