A Haven for Biodiversity and Carbon Sequestration
The Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, established in 2021, is a haven for biodiversity and a pioneer in carbon sequestration. Spanning over 4,269 square kilometers, this "wildlife and plant paradise" boasts a forest coverage of 95.85%, encompassing over 95% of the island's primary forests and more than 55% of its natural woodlands.
This unique ecosystem is home to a plethora of endangered species, including the Hainan gibbons, the round-nosed giant lizard, the Hainan partridge, and the Hainan peacock-pheasant. Relocation and reintroduction efforts have seen the return of 30 Hainan Eld's deer, while precious plant species like agarwood, Hopea hainanensis Merrill & Chun, and the over 2,600-year-old Dacrydium pectinatum flourish within the park's boundaries.
The park's dense tropical rainforest acts as a crucial ecological shield for Hainan, earning the moniker "ecological green heart" for its local and global conservation significance. It serves as the wellspring for major rivers like the Nandu, Changhua, and Wanquan, playing a pivotal role in water source conservation and acting as a critical ecological barrier against wind and flood hazards.
Since the launch of a pilot system for a tropical rainforest national park in 2019, the Hainan tropical rainforest has uncovered a total of 75 new species, including nine new records for China and 19 new records specific to Hainan province. This remarkable discovery highlights the park's vital role in biodiversity conservation.
Furthermore, the Hainan tropical rainforest is a pioneer in carbon sequestration. Its groundbreaking work has led to an initial transaction volume of 350,000 yuan ($47,732) in tropical rainforest carbon offsets. This initiative demonstrates the park's commitment to environmental sustainability and its potential to contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.
The Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Its rich ecosystem, groundbreaking carbon sequestration efforts, and commitment to scientific research make it a beacon of hope for the future of our planet.
