Dozens Face Punishments
A fire that engulfed the century-old grand auditorium at Henan University in May has resulted in punishments for dozens of individuals. The blaze, which occurred while the building was undergoing repairs, caused significant damage to the historic landmark.
An investigation by the local fire rescue department revealed that the fire covered an area of 3,410 square meters and caused an estimated economic loss of 27.438 million yuan ($3.79 million). The report attributed the fire to safety management deficiencies at the construction site, including illegal open flame operations, supervisory neglect, design violations, and failures by local authorities to fulfill their responsibilities.
Sixteen individuals, including personnel from the construction and supervision teams, are suspected of committing crimes and have been transferred to judicial authorities for legal proceedings. Administrative penalties have also been imposed on Henan University and the companies involved in the renovation project for their illegal actions.
Disciplinary and supervisory authorities have taken action against 32 officials from local Party committees, governments, and relevant departments for their dereliction of duty in the accident. This includes a warning for Song Zhenghui, deputy governor of Henan; disciplinary punishments for 26 individuals, including Mao Jie, director of the Provincial Department of Education; and legal processing for five individuals suspected of committing crimes.
The fire at Henan University serves as a reminder of the importance of safety management and accountability in construction projects. The punishments handed down to those responsible for the fire highlight the need for strict adherence to regulations and proper oversight to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
