China Enhances Disease Control Measures Amidst Health Risks

In a move to bolster its disease control infrastructure, China has announced it will deepen reforms aimed at strengthening the monitoring and management of infectious diseases this year. Health authorities revealed that a significant advancement in this regard was the creation of the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration in May 2021, which has led to the establishment of disease control bureaus at provincial levels throughout the country.

During a recent annual meeting, officials indicated that the focus would be on finalizing municipal and county-level disease control organizations and defining their roles and development standards. There will also be an emphasis on enhancing core capabilities in various aspects, including disease surveillance, emergency responses, and epidemiological investigations, among others.

Minister Lei Haichao of the National Health Commission underlined the importance of improving information sharing between medical facilities and disease control entities. He called for better incentives for disease control personnel and more financial support for public health institutions, emphasizing the need for vaccines and advanced technologies to play a critical role in disease prevention.

Additionally, to combat chronic diseases like cancer and heart issues, which account for a substantial portion of deaths in the country, Lei proposed increasing early cancer screening and providing health guidance to children and adolescents at risk. He also mentioned the nurturing of more international public health professionals to enhance medical aid initiatives abroad.

The administration reported that it introduced various guidelines throughout the previous year to tackle infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, while also establishing a warning system for monitoring contagious diseases. The number of specialized teams for sudden outbreaks has expanded, and local teams have been trained in cities and counties.

With the Spring Festival approaching, there is renewed urgency to control the spread of respiratory illnesses, although the current intensity of acute respiratory disease is reported to be lower than in previous years. While influenza remains prevalent, other respiratory virus infections are relatively contained.

However, the administration is monitoring the spread of norovirus, which has been affecting school and daycare populations. Mi Feng, a spokesperson for the National Health Commission, reassured the public that all circulating respiratory illnesses stem from known pathogens, and no new infectious diseases have been identified.
