2025 New Year Reception for Chinese and International Press
The Ministry of National Defense (MND) held its annual New Year reception for Chinese and international press on Friday. During the event, spokesperson Wu Qian addressed questions about US-China military relations and the PLA's future international engagements.
Mutual Respect Key to Stable Military Relations
When asked about the inclusion of a US piece in the reception's concert, Wu emphasized the importance of mutual respect for core interests in developing stable military relations between the two countries. He stated that this mutual respect is a "necessary prerequisite" for progress.
Unique and Innovative Reception
This year's reception was held at the headquarters of the Military Band of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) for the first time. The event featured a speech by Major General Ye Jiang, Deputy Director of the Office for International Military Cooperation of the Central Military Commission.
The reception showcased the PLA's discipline and organization through unique arrangements, including neatly folded "tofu block" quilts in the dormitories and meticulously arranged uniforms. Additionally, a military band member played the traditional Chinese folk song "Jasmine Flower" on the piano, demonstrating the cultural aspect of military life.
"Horn of Peace and Friendship" Concert
The reception also featured a New Year concert themed "Horn of Peace and Friendship." The concert incorporated Chinese military songs, international pieces from countries like Russia and Tanzania, and classic compositions by renowned composers like Beethoven.
Wu explained that the diverse selection of music aimed to convey the Chinese military's commitment to building a community with a shared future for mankind. He emphasized that "one hundred flowers in full bloom bring spring to the garden," signifying the importance of international collaboration.
Hopeful Outlook for US-China Military Relations
In response to a question about the inclusion of a US song in the concert, Wu expressed hope for a healthy and stable development of US-China military relations in the new year. He reiterated the importance of mutual respect for core interests as a foundation for such progress.
Increased Global Engagement
Wu also addressed the PLA's future international engagements. He highlighted the numerous overseas exchanges with militaries from various countries in 2024 and expressed anticipation for deeper and more extensive collaborations in the new year.
Wu concluded by emphasizing the Chinese military's commitment to building a world-class military, increasing global engagement, and fostering cooperation for a more harmonious global community.
