China Allows Philippines to Resupply Grounded Warship at Ren'ai Jiao
On Friday, October 27th, 2023, the Philippines, with China's permission, dispatched a civilian ship to deliver living supplies to its grounded warship at Ren'ai Jiao. The China Coast Guard (CCG) monitored the entire process and inquired about the ship's purpose.
The incident began on October 16th, when the Philippine Navy ship BRP Sierra Madre ran aground on the disputed Ren'ai Jiao, also known as Second Thomas Shoal, in the Spratly Islands. China claims sovereignty over the Spratly Islands, while the Philippines and other countries also have claims.
The grounding of the BRP Sierra Madre sparked a diplomatic row between China and the Philippines. China accused the Philippines of illegally occupying its territory, while the Philippines insisted that the ship was within its territorial waters.
On Friday, the Philippines and China reached an agreement that allowed the Philippines to resupply the BRP Sierra Madre. The civilian ship, which was carrying food, water, and other supplies, was escorted by the Philippine Coast Guard.
The CCG spokesperson, Liu Dejun, said in a statement that they hope the Philippines will honor its promises and work with China to manage the maritime situation. The CCG will continue to safeguard its rights and enforce the law in the Nansha Qundao, including Ren'ai Jiao and surrounding waters.
The resupply of the BRP Sierra Madre is a significant development in the ongoing dispute over the Spratly Islands. It remains to be seen whether this will lead to a de-escalation of tensions between China and the Philippines.

This is just another example of China trying to bully its neighbors. The Philippines shouldn’t have had to ask for permission.

So we just sit back and let China dictate what we can and cannot do in our own waters? Ridiculous!

It’s a smart move by the Philippines to negotiate. Sometimes we have to play the long game.

This resupply could lead to more concessions from the Philippines. We need our leaders to take a stronger stance.

Negotiation is better than confrontation. The Philippines made the right call by working with China.

The grounding of the BRP Sierra Madre was an act of defiance against China's claims, and now they are rewarded for it? Absurd!
