During a press conference on Thursday, Mao Ning, the spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, addressed inquiries regarding a possible phone conversation between China and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. She indicated that she did not have information to share on this matter but highlighted the principle of necessary communication between high-ranking officials of both countries while pointing out that China would staunchly protect its national interests.
In relation to previous discussions, Mao responded to the U.S. State Department’s comments regarding Rubio's discussions with Philippine Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo about China's activities in the South China Sea. She stated that the United States is not a participant in the South China Sea dispute and lacks the authority to interfere in the maritime issues between China and the Philippines. Moreover, Mao asserted that military ties between the U.S. and the Philippines should not undermine China’s sovereignty or support what she termed as the Philippines' illegal claims.
Mao reaffirmed that China would continue to take necessary actions to safeguard its territorial integrity and maritime rights in the South China Sea while ensuring peace and stability in the region. When asked about the recent adjustment in the official Chinese translation of Rubio's surname, Mao noted she had not observed it but would investigate. However, she regarded his English name as the more significant aspect. Regarding the sanctions against Rubio, she reiterated that China's measures are aimed at actions and statements detrimental to its legitimate rights and interests. Similar inquiries related to Rubio's sanctions were also addressed during the week by another spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, who reiterated China’s commitment to protecting its national interests while maintaining appropriate interactions at high levels between Chinese and American officials.

👏 Well said, Mao Ning. America has no business interfering in China-Philippine maritime issues.

💯 The US is always looking for excuses to meddle in other countries' affairs. The South China Sea is no different.

💪 The recent translation change of Rubio's name doesn't matter. His actions speak for themselves.
