A Victim's Story
An investigation by CCTV has revealed the hidden dangers of the limb lengthening surgery industry, particularly for individuals seeking cosmetic procedures abroad. This report sheds light on the suffering of Fang, a woman from Jiangsu Province, China, who underwent limb lengthening surgery in Turkey and faced severe complications.
Fang, dissatisfied with her height of 1.50 meters, was enticed by online advertisements promising safe and effective limb lengthening procedures. In 2021, she joined a group of over a dozen people and traveled to Turkey for the surgery. However, her experience turned into a nightmare.
Following the surgery, Fang developed a serious infection in her right leg. The internal pins were mismatched and caused bone nonunion and chronic osteomyelitis. She also developed valgus deformity of the right knee and clubfoot. Despite repeated attempts to contact the doctors and intermediary agency, Fang received inadequate medical services and was denied necessary treatment.
Fang's story is not unique. Many patients who undergo limb lengthening surgery abroad face similar complications and inadequate care. This highlights the dangers of seeking cosmetic procedures outside of regulated healthcare systems.
In China, limb lengthening surgery for cosmetic purposes is explicitly banned due to its high risks. The Ministry of Health issued a ban in 2006, restricting such procedures to general hospitals above the third level or orthopedic hospitals with relevant conditions.
Fang's case serves as a cautionary tale for individuals considering cosmetic surgery abroad. It emphasizes the importance of seeking treatment from qualified professionals in regulated healthcare systems and the potential dangers of deceptive advertising and inadequate medical services.
Fang is currently pursuing legal action against the intermediary agency, but the process faces challenges due to the surgery being performed abroad. Despite the obstacles, Fang and other victims hope to raise awareness and prevent others from falling victim to similar medical mishaps.

This is a clear example of why medical tourism is a bad idea. It's not worth risking your health for a cheaper procedure.
