CH-YH1000 Unmanned Transport Aircraft Completes Crucial Taxiing Test in Hubei

The CH-YH1000 unmanned transport aircraft recently achieved a significant milestone by completing a full-load taxiing test at Zhanghe Airport in Jingmen, Hubei Province, on January 20, 2025. Described as akin to a "pickup truck in the air," this drone is anticipated to offer a valuable logistics solution particularly for remote areas where conventional shipping services are limited.

The CH-YH1000 features a design characteristic of typical transport aircraft, incorporating two engines and a high wing structure. To facilitate efficient cargo delivery, it boasts an upward-flipping nose door. Additionally, the aircraft is equipped with a belly hatch, which can be utilized for various special operations such as emergency airdrops, pesticide application, or firefighting efforts.

According to Huang Wei from Aerospace CH UAV Co Ltd, the completion of the taxiing test marks an important step in the developmental journey of the unmanned transport aircraft. The process involves multiple mission-critical phases such as taxiing at different speeds, initial flights, and comprehensive testing with payloads. Unlike manned aircraft, where test pilots are essential, the CH-YH1000 relies on autonomous programming for its taxiing tests, allowing the drone to interpret instructions and navigate independently.

The reliability of the craft's control systems is paramount, especially as the technology has been derived from the established CH-3D reconnaissance drone. The project began in March 2024, benefiting from previous advancements in unmanned aircraft technology, and a prototype was showcased at the Zhuhai Airshow in November the preceding year. Following the recent taxiing test, the development team plans to further optimize the drone’s performance to enhance its stability before progressing to the first flight.

Huang noted the differences in precautions between unmanned and manned aircraft, emphasizing the importance of equipment reliability and environmental safety during the initial flight phase. Future tests will include takeoff and landing in challenging environments, along with implementing defenses against potential hacking incidents.

The CH-YH1000 aims to provide efficient air transportation, improving logistics in regions like Xizang and Xinjiang. Huang expressed that this technology could revolutionize the delivery systems in remote towns where traditional land transportation is lacking, fostering enhanced online shopping experiences. With the capability for autonomous night operations, this drone is set to play a vital role in logistics, emergency response, and military supply, driving forward the growth of China's low-altitude economy and unmanned transport aircraft sector.
