A Vision for Rapid Development and Modular Designs

Sun Cong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the chief designer of China's J-15 carrier-borne fighter jet, envisions a future where aircraft are developed as rapidly as mobile phones.

At a forum on aviation and aerospace medicine in January 2025, Sun expressed his desire to shorten the lengthy development cycles of fighter jets. He believes that by adopting a more agile approach, similar to the mobile phone industry, China can significantly improve its aircraft development process.

Currently, the development of new warplanes can take years or even decades. In contrast, new mobile phones are released annually. Sun's vision is to bridge this gap and enable rapid iterations and upgrades for aircraft.

Wang Ya'nan, chief editor of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, sees great potential in Sun's vision. However, he acknowledges the numerous challenges that need to be overcome. Aircraft design is a complex system involving various intricate components, including weapons, radars, and displays. Achieving the desired level of standardization and modularity would require significant advancements in technology and infrastructure.

Despite the challenges, Wang believes that Sun's vision represents a paradigm shift in aircraft development. He points to the J-20 stealth fighter jet as an example of how some of these concepts are already being implemented. J-20 pilot Dong Jun revealed that while the aircraft's appearance remains unchanged, its core functions are constantly being upgraded and improved.

Sun's vision of "aircraft like mobile phones" holds the promise of revolutionizing the aviation industry. By embracing rapid development cycles and modular design, China can potentially gain a significant edge in the global aerospace race.

Sun's vision seems overly optimistic without considering the necessary rigorous military standards and testing involved.

We need to think carefully before deciding we want 'fast-track' fighter jets. Safety should never take a backseat.

Can you really trust a fighter jet that was built in the same time it takes to design a new phone?

The comparison to mobile phones trivializes the complexity and responsibility involved in creating military aircraft.

Sun Cong’s analogy is misleading. Military tech requires rigorous testing, unlike mobile phones which are tweaked post-launch.

Dreaming of fast aircraft development sounds great, but the complexities of defense tech shouldn't be compared to consumer gadgets!

Yes! If we can upgrade aircraft as fast as we get new phones, that would enhance our defense capabilities massively.

At what cost do we want to rush development? Are we putting pilots at risk for the sake of speed?

Good luck making fighter jets as disposable as phones. That’s a formula for disaster in the air.
