China Coast Guard Takes Action Against Illegal Marine Activities

The China Coast Guard (CCG) has been proactive in combating illegal activities on the South China Sea throughout 2024, handling more than 250 cases concerning issues like unauthorized sea sand mining and the misuse of marine resources. In a recent statement, the CCG highlighted several significant incidents and its ongoing commitment to safeguarding marine environments.

Various departments of the CCG took substantial steps to uncover illegal operations. For instance, on January 11, authorities in Fujian Province intercepted six ships suspected of illegally mining sea sand near Fuzhou, resulting in the confiscation of over 18,000 tons of sand and the arrest of 33 individuals linked to a Guangdong-based company's illicit activities. This company had reportedly disguised its operations under a dredging project, illegally extracting sand for profit.

In another notable case from June 13, a Guangzhou-based company was found to have dumped waste at sea without a permit, conducting over 400 illegal waste dumping incidents between March and June. As a result, the local coast guard bureau imposed a fine of approximately 1.35 million yuan ($184,534) on the company for its environmental violations.

Throughout the year, the CCG also discovered instances of illegal fishing and the trafficking of endangered species. In May, a fishing vessel was confiscated with 12,700 seahorses onboard, showcasing the ongoing issues related to illegal fishing practices. Additionally, in April, a foreign fishing vessel was intercepted, leading to the confiscation of over 1,200 live and dead corals.

The CCG's efforts extend to addressing unlawful waste disposal on protected lands, as illustrated by a case involving a catering service company that set up a dumping site on Yuetuo Island without the necessary approvals. The company was fined 170,000 yuan for its unauthorized actions.

In cooperation with other governmental bodies, the CCG has implemented a "Blue Sea" campaign focusing on law enforcement in vital marine areas. This initiative targets illegal activities that disrupt marine ecosystems, emphasizing the need for inspections and regulatory measures to protect marine life and natural resources.

Does the CCG have sufficient resources and manpower to consistently monitor and combat illegal activities across the vast expanse of the South China Sea?

The article highlights the CCG's work but doesn't mention the involvement of local communities in marine conservation efforts. Their participation is crucial.

The overall effectiveness of the CCG's efforts can be better assessed with a transparent and publicly accessible database of its operations, including statistics and impact assessments.

Kudos to the Guangzhou-based company getting fined for illegal waste dumping. This sends a strong message against harming the delicate marine ecosystem with impunity.
