A Record-Breaking Actress
Viola Davis, an EGOT winner and one of the most celebrated actresses of our time, holds a significant record in the history of the Academy Awards. With four nominations, she is the most Oscar-nominated Black actress in history.
Davis's nominations include two for Best Supporting Actress ("Doubt" and "Fences", for which she won) and two for Best Actress ("The Help" and "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"). In a 2021 interview with Variety, she reflected on this achievement, stating, "For me, it's a reflection of the lack of opportunities and access to opportunities people of color have had in this business. If me, going back to the Oscars four times in 2021, makes me the most nominated Black actress in history, that's a testament to the sheer lack of material there has been out there for artists of color."
Following closely behind Davis is Octavia Spencer, with three nominations ("The Help," "Hidden Figures," and "The Shape of Water"). Whoopi Goldberg, with two nominations for "Ghost" and "The Color Purple," is the only other Black actress with more than one competitive Oscar nomination.

Focusing on individual achievements within a systemically biased system can detract from the larger conversation about representation and inclusion.

Davis is defying stereotypes and proving that Black actresses can achieve anything they set their minds to.

These awards are subjective and based on the tastes of a select group. Celebrating individual success shouldn't overshadow the need for systemic change.

While Davis's achievement is commendable, the lack of opportunities for Black actresses is the real story here.
