A courageous employee at a Sainsbury's Argos warehouse in Croydon intervened during a violent incident, successfully repelling an attacker armed with a knife by striking him with a fire extinguisher. The alarming event took place Thursday morning, resulting in five individuals being admitted to the hospital with various stab wounds.
According to Scotland Yard, the victims included one man in his 50s, two in their 30s, and two in their 20s. The authorities reported that a 30-year-old man was taken into custody on charges of grievous bodily harm and possessing an offensive weapon.
Witness accounts reveal that workers barricaded themselves during the assault. Joseph Denton, a 29-year-old employee, described how he confronted the assailant while trying to secure a door to the warehouse. He recounted the terrifying experience, stating, “He didn’t say a word. He was trying to kill me and I’d never seen him before in my life.”
Denton detailed the chaos, mentioning that two people were stabbed in the chest, with another sustaining a serious arm injury. As the attacker attempted to break in, Denton bravely deflected blows aimed at his chest, suffering some cuts in the process. Ultimately, multiple friends helped him subdue the attacker, who then fled the scene.
The Metropolitan Police later confirmed the apprehension of the suspect, who had non-life-threatening injuries. Local policing leader, Chief Superintendent Andy Brittain, assured the community that the investigation is ongoing but emphasized that the suspects were likely acquainted, minimizing any broader threat to public safety. An Argos representative expressed their commitment to supporting staff and cooperating with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.
