President Trump's reported selection of Don Dempsey, a healthcare industry lobbyist, for a key position in the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) could lead to a power struggle with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump's controversial nominee for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Dempsey, currently the head of policy and research at Better Medicare Alliance, a lobby group funded by insurance companies, would oversee the US's $1.8 trillion healthcare budget and have authority over 13 agencies. This role appears to contradict Trump's promise to Kennedy of free rein to implement his "Make America Healthy Again" agenda.

Dempsey's appointment could also create tension with Kennedy due to their differing views on the healthcare industry. Dempsey represents the established healthcare system, while Kennedy is a vocal critic of Big Pharma.

Kennedy's confirmation by the Senate is uncertain, given his history of promoting conspiracy theories and skepticism towards vaccines. Despite his recent claims of supporting vaccines, his past statements contradict the views of most medical professionals. Over 15,000 doctors signed an open letter urging senators not to confirm Kennedy, calling him "actively dangerous."

Dempsey's potential role at the OMB could also bring him into contact with Elon Musk, whose newly-founded Department of Government Efficiency aims to cut federal waste, potentially impacting healthcare spending.

Trump's administration is taking shape with the appointment of Dempsey, Vought, Merkel, and Zinberg, all of whom previously served in his first term. These appointments suggest a continuation of Trump's previous healthcare policies.
