Greggs Recalls Steak Bakes Due to Packaging Error
Greggs has recalled a batch of its popular steak bakes due to a packaging error. The affected packs contain sausage, bean and cheese melts instead of steak bakes, and the packaging does not declare the presence of sulphites, which are a potential health risk for individuals with sensitivities.
The recall specifically applies to packs of two frozen steak bakes sold exclusively at Iceland supermarkets with a best before date of May 15, 2025. No other products, date codes, or batches are believed to be affected.
Customers who have purchased the affected product are advised not to consume it and to return it to their nearest Iceland store for a full refund.
Understanding Sulphite Sensitivity
Sulphites are naturally found in some foods and are also used as preservatives to extend shelf life and maintain color and flavor. However, individuals with sensitivities to sulphites can experience adverse reactions, including stomach issues and airway problems.
Sulphites release sulphur dioxide, an irritant gas that can constrict airways and trigger stomach problems in sensitive individuals. The gas is released when sulphite-containing foods interact with stomach acid, and it can also back up into the airway, causing additional symptoms.
While the incidence of sulphite sensitivity in the general population is estimated to be less than 2%, it is higher among individuals with asthma, ranging from 5% to 13%. Reactions to sulphites can vary from mild to severe, with some reports of anaphylaxis in individuals with severe allergies.

This recall is just a marketing gimmick to create unnecessary hype around the brand.

Can’t believe they are making such a big deal over a packaging error. Just fix the label!

This is just going to hurt their sales for no good reason. Just a label issue, come on!

Sulphite sensitivity is hardly common. Seems exaggerated for a simple mix-up.

This is a waste of resources. There are so many other issues in the food industry!

It's great that Greggs is accepting responsibility and taking prompt action.
