The family of Axel Rudakubana, the perpetrator of the Southport holiday club knife attack, has been left devastated by the incident. The 18-year-old, who has autism and has struggled with mental health issues, killed six-year-old Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, and injured 10 others during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29.
In a statement, leaders of The Community Church in Southport, attended by Rudakubana's father Alphonse, confirmed that Alphonse has been a valued member of the church family for several years. However, they clarified that Rudakubana and his family never attended Sunday gatherings or played an active role in church life.
The church community has been deeply saddened and shocked by the attack. They continue to pray for peace and healing for all those impacted by the tragic events in Southport and beyond. The leaders also acknowledged the outpouring of love and support from the local community, which reflects the true nature and spirit of their town. However, they expressed sadness that this was overshadowed by the appalling attack on the local mosque, fueled by fake racially motivated news on social media.

The mental health issue should not be an excuse for his actions. This tragedy could have been prevented.

It seems like everyone is making excuses. This kind of violence cannot be overlooked!

It's hard to sympathize with the family when they raised someone capable of such violence. They should have done more to get him help!

Instead of pointing fingers, let’s come together to help those who are struggling and create safer spaces.
