Kevin He Makes History as First Chinese-Born Player to Sign NHL Contract
18-year-old Kevin He has etched his name in history as the first Chinese-born hockey player to sign an NHL contract. The Winnipeg Jets announced the signing of a three-year, entry-level deal worth $975,000 per season at the NHL level.
"It's a dream come true," He expressed at Sphere Las Vegas after being selected by the Jets. "It's incredible, a huge honor."
He's achievement has been met with widespread praise and congratulations, with many netizens describing it as "well-deserved."
A Historic Draft Pick
In June 2024, He was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the fourth round of the NHL Draft (109th overall), becoming the highest-drafted Chinese-born player in NHL history. This followed Anton Song's selection by the New York Islanders in 2015, marking He as the second Chinese-born player ever drafted.
"This means a lot to me and my family," He said, reflecting on his historic draft position. "I grew up in China, so I had some chances to skate."
A Rising Star in the World of Ice Hockey
He's journey to this point has been remarkable. Born in Beijing in 2006, he began ice skating at the age of 4 thanks to his father's encouragement. His family's move to Montreal when he was 6 provided him with his first experience with organized hockey.
Adapting to a new country and language, He learned French while attending school in Montreal and English during a stay with relatives in Connecticut.
Currently, He plays for the Niagara IceDogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he serves as the team's captain, another historic first for a Chinese-born player.
An Impressive Track Record
He's performance on the ice has been equally impressive. This season, he has scored 23 goals and 20 assists for a total of 43 points in 29 games, ranking second on his team. Over his OHL career, he has amassed 130 points (75 goals, 55 assists) in 159 games.
A Bright Future Ahead
Following the signing, He is expected to begin his professional career in lower-tier leagues like the ECHL, the premier AA Hockey League, and the American Hockey League (AHL) before potentially earning a chance to be promoted to the NHL.
He's talent and dedication suggest a bright future ahead. He has the potential to bypass the lower leagues and go directly to the AHL, with a strong chance of eventually making it to the NHL. His journey is an inspiration to young athletes around the world, demonstrating the power of hard work and determination.

Is this just another publicity stunt by the NHL? Time will tell.
