China Warns Against Invasive Species
China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) has issued a warning about the environmental risks associated with invasive species. These species can infiltrate China through goods and mail shipments, often through false declarations of product names to bypass customs. The illicit import of exotic pets also poses a significant threat.
The booming global trade has led to increased cross-border transportation of goods, creating opportunities for the spread of alien species. The MSS cited the example of the red imported fire ant, which can reproduce rapidly and disrupt local ecosystems.
The ministry also reported instances of individuals falsely declaring product names to bypass regulations, such as a shipment of 979 live ants disguised as an "electric kettle."
Due to a lack of knowledge, some people unknowingly introduce alien species across borders. The Canadian goldenrod, for example, has disrupted ecological balance due to its rapid spread.
The growing popularity of "exotic pets" also poses a threat. These unusual animals and plants can harm agriculture, deplete resources, and escalate management costs.
The MSS urged Chinese nationals to adhere to laws and regulations by not importing, mailing, or transporting foreign species into the country and refraining from releasing or keeping foreign pets.
