Thai PM Invites Chinese Tourists Amid Safety Concerns and AI Technology

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has taken measures to address the safety of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand, particularly against the backdrop of ongoing concerns over human trafficking and safety issues associated with the Thai-Myanmar border. To overcome language barriers and effectively communicate this assurance, the Thai government released an AI-generated video featuring a digital version of Ms. Paetongtarn speaking fluent Mandarin, despite her not being proficient in the language.

In the video, lasting 1.32 minutes and shared on the official Facebook page of the government, the AI likeness conveys a message prioritizing the safety of tourists in Thailand. The Prime Minister expressed her dedication to providing a secure and pleasant travel experience for all visitors. In her address, she specifically extended an invitation to Chinese tourists to join in the celebration of the Chinese New Year in Thailand, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The release of this AI-generated video comes in light of alarming reports involving Chinese nationals being deceived into participating in scam operations based near the border with Myanmar. These incidents have generated anxiety on Chinese social media platforms, where many users have labeled Thailand as a risky place for travel. Furthermore, on January 11, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand advised its citizens to remain vigilant and cautious against scams presenting false job opportunities, as well as offers of "free tickets, food, and accommodation."

Nevertheless, Chinese tourists continue to represent the largest group of visitors to Thailand, with data indicating that they constituted almost one-sixth of the 1.3 million arrivals in the initial weeks of January. The Thai government forecasts a growth of about seven percent in Chinese tourist arrivals during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, anticipating that this influx will contribute approximately 8.8 billion baht (about $255 million) to the tourism sector.

Investing in AI for tourist appeasement feels frivolous while the scams' underlying issues linger.

I wonder how AI messaging actually reaches those affected by trafficking scams.

Not sure AI can accurately convey the nuances and human aspects of assuring safety.

This feels like greenwashing Thailand's reputation by sweeping these issues under the rug.
