Growing Football Talent in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in Northwest China is presently gaining attention for the rising number of football talents emerging from the area. This growth is attributed to a series of initiatives designed to expand youth engagement in football and promote the sport at a grassroots level. Xu Ming, the chairman of the Xinjiang Football Association, highlighted the innate qualities of the players, linking their success to both their natural physical abilities and a strong passion for football.

In an exclusive interview, Xu expressed appreciation for the robust youth training systems found in the eastern regions of the country, which have played a significant role in the development of players from Xinjiang. He noted that this success serves as an inspiration for the youth in the region. In cities like Kashi and Yili, significant strides are being made toward integrating sports and educational systems with football training as part of a pilot program in the western regions of China. Following the establishment of a football academy at Xinjiang Normal University, Kashi University and Yili Normal University have announced their own academies, which are expected to contribute to a steady influx of talent.

Xu highlighted the educational benefits of football for young players, emphasizing the life skills it cultivates—such as willpower, teamwork, and resilience—that can benefit individuals in various fields, whether they remain in football or not. Local community football clubs are encouraged to build partnerships with schools to facilitate regular training and friendly matches, fostering a collaborative environment for skill development.

Additionally, a new youth football training base supported by Shenzhen has been established in Kashi, featuring extensive facilities for local children to train. This investment aims to enhance local talent development and sports participation among youth.

A recent highlight for Xinjiang football was a vital goal scored by player Behram Abduweli that led to China’s victory against Indonesia in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The region boasts a solid grassroots foundation in major ball sports, including football, and has recently hosted a league that attracted significant public engagement, underscoring the enthusiasm for sports among young people.
