China and UK Restart Economic and Financial Dialogue
Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves in Beijing on Saturday. The meeting marked the resumption of the China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue (EFD) after a six-year hiatus.
Han Zheng emphasized the importance of strengthening economic and financial cooperation between the two countries, highlighting their roles as major economies and financial heavyweights. He expressed China's willingness to expand openness and exchanges with the UK, deepen cooperation, and bring benefits to both countries and the world.
Reeves echoed the significance of restarting the dialogue, emphasizing the UK's commitment to developing relations with China and promoting economic development for both nations. She noted the importance of candid dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation.
The 11th China-UK EFD, co-chaired by He Lifeng and Rachel Reeves, focused on implementing the consensus reached by the leaders of both countries, strengthening communication and dialogue, and expanding economic and financial cooperation. Both sides expressed their willingness to enhance practical cooperation and develop a mutually respectful relationship.
The resumption of the EFD has been welcomed by the UK Chamber of Commerce in China, which sees it as a significant step towards rejuvenating economic ties and strengthening bilateral relations. The Chamber hopes that the renewed engagement will foster constructive discussions and pave the way for fresh opportunities in trade, investment, and cooperation.
Reeves' visit to China, accompanied by a delegation of senior executives from the City of London, underscores the UK government's efforts to strengthen economic links with China as part of its quest for growth.

The emphasis on economic ties is misplaced. The UK should be more concerned with ethical issues.

Economic cooperation at what cost? The UK should focus on its own issues instead of collaborating with a country that poses a global threat.

It's frustrating to see the UK prioritize commerce over the moral implications of dealing with a country like China.

This dialogue seems to ignore the pressing concerns regarding environmental issues in China. We can't be complicit.
