A Call for Compassion and Inclusion
On Tuesday, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, delivered a sermon at the Washington National Cathedral that sparked controversy. While the cathedral typically hosts bipartisan events honoring leaders from both sides of the aisle, Budde's sermon directly criticized President Donald Trump and some of his policies.
Budde's remarks focused on Trump's recent executive orders, particularly those related to immigration and transgender rights. She expressed concern for "gay, lesbian, and transgender children" who might fear for their lives under the new administration, and urged Trump to show mercy towards undocumented immigrants.
Budde acknowledged Trump's belief that God intervened to save him from an assassination attempt, but then pivoted to criticize his policies. She argued that deporting undocumented immigrants would harm families and communities, and that most immigrants are not criminals but rather contribute positively to society.
This is not the first time Budde has publicly disagreed with Trump. In 2020, she condemned the use of tear gas to clear peaceful protesters from the area around St. John's Episcopal Church so that Trump could visit.
Trump responded to Budde's sermon by calling it "not too exciting" and "not a good service." He also suggested that the cathedral could "do much better."
Budde's sermon has sparked debate, with some praising her for speaking out against what they see as harmful policies, while others criticize her for politicizing the pulpit.

I admire her for not shying away from tough topics. Faith isn’t just about comfort; it’s about taking a stand!

Her sermon was just another attempt to push a liberal agenda from the pulpit. Totally uncalled for.

Bishop Budde’s compassion reflects true Christian values. We need more of this in the world.

Not everyone agrees with her views. She’s alienating a portion of her congregation.

It's inappropriate for a religious leader to publicly criticize a sitting president. She’s crossing a line.

It’s high time churches became places of advocacy and inclusion. Thank you, Bishop Budde!

Budde should focus on prayer and guidance, not harsh criticisms. She's lost sight of what truly matters.

This sermon was disrespectful and detrimental to our values as a community.

I commend her for using her platform to speak out against injustices. That’s what leadership is all about.

Criticizing Trump in a sermon won’t change anything. It only adds fuel to the division in our country.

Instead of healing, she chose to divide. This isn’t what I expect from my church leaders.

Her comments come off as self-serving. It seems like a publicity stunt rather than genuine concern.

Bishop Budde is using her platform for her own agenda. That's not the role of a spiritual leader.

In my experience, politics should have no place in the church. Budde missed the mark entirely.
