In a tragic incident in Central Java, Indonesia, a landslide caused by severe rain has led to the deaths of at least 17 people, as officials report that nine others are missing. The landslide occurred on Monday in a mountainous region near Pekalongan city, collapsing at least one bridge and burying multiple houses and vehicles under heavy mud.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman, Abdul Muhari, confirmed that a joint rescue team managed to recover another victim, bringing the death toll to 17. The search for the missing individuals has become more urgent, as the count rose from three to nine. The landslide's impact was significant, burying two homes and pulling several vehicles, complicating rescue operations due to the remote location and hazardous conditions.
Pekalongan police chief Doni Prakoso Widamanto reported that ten individuals were injured and have since been transported to hospitals and local health centers for treatment. The landslide struck approximately 90 kilometers west of Semarang city and occurred during a time of intense rainfall in the region, particularly in hilly areas that are more vulnerable to such disasters.
Local television footage depicted volunteers as they recovered bodies using makeshift stretchers, while the roads remained covered in thick mud. With weather forecasts predicting moderate rainfall over the next few days, there are concerns about potential floods, flash floods, and further landslides in the affected areas.
