Barcelona's head coach, Hansi Flick, highlighted the significance of his team's mindset following their exhilarating 5-4 comeback against Benfica, ensuring their advancement to the Champions League knockout stage. After a lackluster 1-1 draw in LaLiga against Getafe, the team found themselves trailing 3-1 at halftime due to a hat-trick from Benfica's Vangelis Pavlidis, who capitalized on some careless defending by Barcelona.
In the second half, however, the team displayed notable improvement, even when they fell behind 4-2 late in the game. A remarkable turnaround saw Robert Lewandowski, Eric Garcia, and Raphinha score, clinching a remarkable victory for Barcelona. "It was quite a chaotic match. The most positive aspect was our mentality," Flick remarked to Movistar. He spoke of the incredibility of the comeback and acknowledged their poor first-half performance.
Flick also explained his decision to start goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny over Inaki Pena, suggesting that it nearly backfired as Szczesny made errors leading to two of Benfica's goals. Nevertheless, Flick defended his goalkeeper, noting that Szczesny improved after the break. He reinforced the idea that mistakes are a part of football, saying, “Which player does not make mistakes? It is normal,” and acknowledged the collective effort of the team during the game.
Looking ahead, Flick stressed the importance of preparing for their upcoming LaLiga match against Valencia, where Barcelona currently sits third, trailing Real Madrid by seven points. They will also face Atalanta in the Champions League shortly after. "These victories provide us with time to believe in this project and inspire young players with our potential for improvement," Flick concluded.
