After the Republicans' electoral success in November, leaders within the European Union have been keen to demonstrate their assurance in handling the potential reascendancy of Donald Trump. They assert that the EU has gained experience in navigating relations with him, suggesting preparedness for his possible return to power.
Despite Trump's campaign rhetoric, which includes threats to impose tariffs on countries he perceives as competitors, as well as his controversial stance on providing support to Ukraine, the EU has maintained a largely composed response. However, increasing frustrations are surfacing among some EU lawmakers who feel that the bloc's passive strategy may not suffice, especially given Trump's aggressive statements, including absurd suggestions like annexing Greenland.
Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, representing the centrist Renew group, emphasized the necessity of not allowing external figures like Trump or Elon Musk to dictate EU actions. The European Parliament is scheduled to discuss the possibility of developing a cohesive strategy to address the unpredictability of US politics, though internal divisions could hinder this process, as the parliament lacks substantial influence over foreign policy decisions.
