Republicans in the Senate Armed Services Committee voted on Monday to advance the nomination of Pete Hegseth, President Trump's pick for defense secretary, to the full Senate. The vote was along party lines, with all 14 Republicans on the committee voting in favor and all 13 Democrats voting against.
Democrats on the committee had raised concerns about allegations of personal misconduct against Hegseth, including an accusation of sexual assault and reports of public drunkenness and financial mismanagement. They had sought to delay the vote to allow more time to investigate these allegations, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Hegseth, a former Fox News commentator and Army veteran, has denied all of the allegations against him. He has said that he is the victim of a "smear campaign" by Democrats who are opposed to his nomination.
The full Senate is expected to vote on Hegseth's nomination in the coming weeks. If confirmed, he would become the first defense secretary to have served in the military since Chuck Hagel, who left office in 2015.

We need leaders who embody integrity. Hegseth's past raises too many red flags.

Every day, we see the impact of toxic masculinity in our politics. Hegseth’s nomination is just another example.

Let’s focus on the job Hegseth can do, not the noise surrounding his nomination. He deserves to lead our defense efforts.

It's shocking how Republicans are willing to ignore serious concerns just to fill a position. What message does that send?

Hegseth should not be in a position of power. We can't afford to take chances with our defense leadership.
