Trump to Rename North America's Tallest Mountain Back to Mount McKinley

On Monday, President Trump announced his plan to sign an executive order that would change the name of North America's highest peak back to Mount McKinley. This move reverses a 2015 decision that returned the mountain to its original name, Denali, which is recognized and cherished by the Alaska Native community.

Trump's decision seems to be influenced by his increasing admiration for William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, who he has described as a "great but highly underrated president." As the campaign progressed, Trump praised McKinley's advocacy for high tariffs, showcasing his historical significance.

However, this change is anticipated to encounter opposition in Alaska, where local politicians and Alaska Natives have expressed strong support for the name Denali, meaning "the great one" or "the high one" in the Koyukon Athabascan language. McKinley was notable for promoting tariffs during his time in the House of Representatives in the 19th century and played a pivotal role in America's territorial expansion, including the controversial annexation of Hawaii, as well as benefiting affluent industrialists.
